Welcome to Human Flourishing Ministries.

HFM is a non-profit ministry dedicated to helping people find life and life abundantly through Jesus Christ and His gospel. My name is Dr. Jonathan Pennington, and I’m a professor at SBTS in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as a scholar, author, and pastor. In my years of teaching I have often asked students a simple question — When you think of “humanity,” what do you think of?

Many, especially in my sub-tradition of Christianity would answer “sinful" or “broken.” However, from a biblical perspective, I believe the first word should be “beloved” or even “beautiful." This test and the typical negative view of humanity answer that is given reflects certain trends in theology that are less than biblical — a loss of the idea that God cares about our real human flourishing. Our human understand of happiness is too shallow, but true, deep, abiding human flourishing even in the midst of this broken, decaying, and often anxiety-causing world is where we will find our true joy and rest.

Through my many years in ministry, in academic teaching, and in life, I have discovered that God does care about our flourishing and that the Bible speaks with great sophistication and wisdom on this greatest of human questions. I’ve also discovered that God has called me to minister grace to people in this way. And so we’ve created this ministry that will help spread this beautiful truth from Holy Scripture.

Human Flourishing Ministries will be involved in several things, but for now it is the umbrella organization over three parts of my ministry:
